Hard Day Bouquet

Sometimes, we just need some hard lovin’s.  Someone to take us in, or take us on.  Someone to hold the space open for us to thrash around: fighting them, fighting ourselves, fighting the whatever it is that is making us feel so very bad, illegitimate, marginalized, stupid, disregarded, etc.  Someone to pull us close, and swaddle us in their arms, until we feel safe again.  Sometimes, we just need from God a bouquet of comfort and truth, for the hard days.  I imagine him saying:

Honey, come on over here and sit down.  You look tired.  You look worn thin.  This world has really thrown you some curve balls today, huh?

 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”  John 16:33

Well, let me tell you something.  I care.  I care about how you are feeling.  And not just me!  Look around you: you are surrounded.  See them?  They all know you are fighting, and they are cheering you on.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Hebrews 12:1-2

And this battle is not just you being silly, or making it all up in your head.  Darling, you are too hard on yourself sometimes.  Because you are my child, you really belong to me.  And because you belong to me, you really do have an enemy, who knows how to get into your mind.

 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

This battle is yours to fight, but never to fight alone.  I will be with you, and I will rescue you, be assured of that.

“He reached down from on high and took hold of me;

he drew me out of deep waters.

He rescued me from my powerful enemy,

from my foes, who were too strong for me.

They confronted me in the day of my disaster,

but the Lord was my support.

He brought me out into a spacious place;

he rescued me because he delighted in me.”

Psalm 18:16-19

Tonight, you need rest: deep peaceful rest.  Let me heal your mind and your heart.  Drift off to sleep, completely relaxed and at ease.  I will be with you all night long.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”  John 14:27

“When you lie down, you will not be afraid;

when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.”

Proverbs 3:24

“In peace I will lie down and sleep,

for you alone, Lord,

make me dwell in safety.”

Psalm 4:8

There you are child.  Tucked in tight, just how you like it.  I’ll just leave this bouquet here by your bedside.  I love you and I am always here with you.  You have done nothing to earn my love, and nothing to lose my love.  I hold you tightly, because you have taken shelter in me.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8

“He will cover you with his feathers,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”

Psalm 91:4
